It had been a rough morning. I had been awake for a couple days due to the beginning stages of withdrawal and now my dad is sick and I need to take him to the hospital. My head shakes and now my head’s shaking. Turned out to be his gall bladder, which they yanked for him, but I was thinking he had internal bleeding and was a might concerned.
What I wanted to be doing was finding dope. Well, what I wanted to be doing was getting cozy and couched in opiated bliss. To be checked out. To nullify. To be the non-entity. But, I was sick, he was sick and we were headed to Duke Hospital in Durham, NC. My mother met us there and after the right amount of minutes I excused myself to “have a smoke, move the car” which I explained through a series of grunts and hand gestures.
It was true, I was doing that. I was also tearing ass to cop some dope a mile away. I thought I was out of luck too but ran into a friend of mine who is now dead. “E”. Big Elvis. Truth be told, he ended up abusing my friendship pretty hard but since he’s dead I’ll drop it. I’ll just say, we did have some fun. One time, whilst incredibly blissed out, he took me to a rooming house on Fayetteville Rd. to show off my Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy skills. Normally I’m only so-so. But, that day all the questions seemed written just for me and the folks in the house were so high they were cheering me on. It was, in fact, one of the best times I’ve ever had.
Anyway, Big E helped me get some dope, I shot it real quick and, as I was talking to him from the driver’s seat as he stood outside my car, I lost consciousness. Me and my SUV started rolling down the hill with my face making sure the car horn works. From what I hear, E chased my car down and stopped it. Then he paid these kids to fill up cups of ice water and dump it on me. A few gallons later and I’m still out. EMTs arrive and I think they asked, “sir have you been doing any drugs?” I then answered by laughing and immediately losing consciousness. Again, that is what I was told.
Next, I was in the hospital, tons of people around me, questions, someone repeating my name (please shut them up, it feels good/nothing here. And then, I am awake. Kind of. I’m left on the gurney, couple of beeping things and coming into focus, my mom peeking through the curtain. She pulls it back and I am in the same hospital, in the same ER, in the bed next to my father’s.
